Bomber Lures Silent or Rattling and Wahoowaterworld.com

BOMBER FAT FREE SILENT BEING ONE OF THEM

With Crank Bait choices in today’s market place. Some look real and are premium or marketed as and some are staples that have been around for years. There are baits that look identical and have some differences hidden within the lure. Lets compare the silent vs. rattling crankbaits.

Crankbaits over the years and for the past 20 years  have had evolution to a lot of silent running crankbaits, some of those that are hand made balsa baits, some are plastic but without rattles or silent running . Back in the day 99% of all plastic crankbaits, had rattles in the bodies. Only a very few plastic crankbaits  had no rattles. The rattles makes the bait easier to cast and cast farther  and made noise on the retrieve. Strike King made hay with the KVD brand because the Micheal Jordan of fishing starting talking it up at tournament and the 1.5, 2.5 and 1.0 series were made big, The came the copy cats all kinds  of sound , rattling ,vibrating, and nonrattling crankbaits, As a brand Strike King and Bomber brands baits offered so many the silent, nonrattling bait it was hard to select  Then s the Rapala Shad Rap and the Lucky Craft LC and BDS  all added silent in crankbaits.Lure manufacturers are coming out with silent versions these days, including Bandit, Norman, Lucky Craft, Bomber, Xcalibur.

You will get all kinds of  observations and opinions that bass are pretty intelligent animals and get conditioned to seeing he same lures being throwing at them. That is why new companies are something successful with something a little new. Hooks on  crankbaits have all kinds of versions on top and weight all change the appearance in some fashion or another.  These things present different profiles to fish and  often get bit on that different profile. Often, the difference is subtle but in other cases it is the only thing that seems to work. Using silent running crankbaits is just part the options you have that any angler can use to get a bite. one more bite or one more fish.

.There really no crank bait silently. The hooks against the body, the vibration that the lure puts off wiggling through the water, the split ring grinding.all create some sound. The term silent just means from a marketing stand point that the lure does not have rattles in the chamber of the bait, and are called silent running. Rattling crankbaits mean just that, there is a rattle chamber with BBs in it. This type of crankbait is the predominant type of lure manufactured currently.

WHY silent and rattling crankbaits, there are times when one works better than another. There is no magic or specific time, but a little trial and error can a more successful trip. During the day determine if something is working better than another kind of crankbait. This can includes changing brands, colors or even types of crankbaits (rattle/nonrattle). That is why things are constantly changing.

Some people and Larry Dahlenberg is the master of modifications that  can be made to the plastic baits include: drilling holes to take the rattles out, or add rattles or different kinds of rattles  to this  gluing the rattles in place, and adding weight The bait can be made silent, but will not work successfully, as it will killed most of the action of the bait.

The most successful of these baits was the hand crafted D Bait, running about $15/lure Stanford Cedar Shad, same as the D-bait, but diving a little deeper and heavier.  Suddeth’s have rattles, only 3 did not have rattles (out of 12), they were successful.

No one has any way to measure  activity with the exception of catch rates, which is marketing and opinion.

So what conditions favor the silent baits over the rattling baits? Here is one opinion overcast skies, wind, slightly stained water (visibility of about 10-12"), after a front or prefrontal conditions (lowering or steady barometric pressure) on a highly pressured lake. But these are the best times for plastic baits also. Keep logs, this seems to help consistency in your fishing. Having guided and fished 1000's of days on a pressured lake . It boils down to this a different setup (different lure, no split ring setup).  There will be times when the silent out produced the rattling Crankbaits, but I thought this would be enough to illustrate the point.

Let’s consider something else, as well why do anglers have baits they fish with in soft plastics and cranks over and over ,Confidence. The same for any fishing silent in ultra-muddy water, you can have just as much, if not more success on silent running baits as rattling baits. Some instances fish attack the bait and clobbered it violently. Sometimes you get hits but it is reaction and not as high a hook up rate.

You see, you cannot be afraid to try things that the fish have not seen before. Fish get accustomed to seeing the same lures day after day, If you can present something that they have not seen before,  the odds have  changed over into your favor. WHAT does that include? Thinking outside the box? Well, there is NO end to the things you can do to change a crankbaits or soft plastics to make it seem different. Imagination is the only thing holding you back from experimenting with different presentations that might be out of the box thinking. MOST anglers will not try things that they are not comfortable with. I, my CONFIDENCE am ME, not the bait. You can figure them out, just give it a little time and you will get something that they will bite. Does this always work, OF COURSE NOT, but it works enough for you us all to continue to do the out of the box things because it works often enough fish in the boat or money in the bank if you are a pro.

So in the end bomber, strike king, Lucky Strike ,Kopers, homemade, balsa, all of it boils down to this they all will catch fish but which one gives a different look, presentation, or vibration and sound. Try them and build your own opinion and confidence.

I have seen a product that some are afraid to use and say it does not help them and they have never even tried it, the fishing rod is not even a bait, it sends vibration to soft plastics, so why if silent, rattling, wiggles, glue, alterations all work why would a vibration to a soft plastic work. It does and there are 100's of anglers who have confidence in it and catch fish.

So be you own and have your own opinion and confidence.
