Fishing Rod Blanks
A Rod's Blank Is Its Foundation, you build a rod on a Blank
not right for the application or for the duty you want then you have a weak
foundation and a rod you will not use. No angler will argue that fishing rod
blanks is the most important piece of any fishing rod. If you ask a rod
engineer they will tell you it is 80% of what makes a rod. Then comes the bling
or durability of the other components and that is dictated by where and what
you fish for. Typically defined as salt or fresh!
Fishing rods is the assembly of many different parts
So what are the parts of a fishing rod after you have the blank?
There are grips types, handles types, reel seats types, guide types, thread wrapping
and even epoxy used to hold it all together. How these elements are place and
the detail of the assembly is what makes a rod power, action, application,
sensitivity and durability. Every
fishing rod manufacturer has their own "formula" of how to best build
fishing rods, some or great others are not so great. Some manufactures fishing
rod blanks components are made to their own specifications. The remainder may
buy or import rod blanks and components from China or other countries.
The blanks are usually graphite, fiberglass, E-glass and
more commonly, a combination of the two. Both materials have their place it all
depends if you want sensitivity, durability, strength, or a combination of all
three. Think of it like this all three cost more than just one. E-Glass is all
strength light weight and strong the durability of E-glass can come into
question some times. Fiberglass gives you strength and durability but less
sensitivity. If you have graphite in the right mixture or what the industry
calls modules. High modules is 640 million plus modulus and much more expensive
and gives you all three. Standard Modulus in Graphite is 500 million Pulse
Modulus and is not as light sensitive is also lessened. If you want to feel a
fish think about hitting your bait use High modulus. If you want to feel every
tap and touch then Standard which is the norm in graphite is the choice.
A angler can get so confused trying to fully understand
the terminology of fishing rod components, especially fishing rod blanks, your
head can explode. The important thing when you are shopping for a quality
fishing rod is choice and having a basic
understanding of what goes into a good rod. The construction and components are
what tells the tale. Not all fishing rods are the same, an ugly stick is ugly
and not sensitive and fiberglass and in the end bomb proof and inexpensive for
a reason. Not all rods are created equal, and not all rods can claim equal in
quality and performance.
MAKING THE CUT
So why all this chatter about fishing rods?, well if the
blank, the components, and the rod design and application are all key to have Strength,
durability, and sensitivity I think there is only one rod company that comes
close to all three. It is not Shimano or G.Loomis which is not Gary Loomis or TFO
which are made in China is not Gary Loomis it is Phenix Rods. With a lineup
of rods that cover ground fish, trout, bass, halibut, offshore and more there
is the only one in my opinion that truly tells you the blank design and
composite story is Phenix Rods. Weight, size, application, durability, sensitivity
and application are all addressed by Phenix Rods. From Abyss Saltwater rods, to trout rods, to
world class high modulus Bass rods. Phenix Rods is my choice in a premium high Quality rod. The
Devil is in the details, and all you have to do is look at the handle design,
the detail cork work and the handle system all the Phenix Rods have amazingly
good attention to detail and bling. There are lots of great rods on the market
but I just keep coming back to Phenix rods.
All anglers are opinionated and much of that is caused by
confidence and what we have has success with. However if you are not from
California and you have not seen, touched or felt a Phenix rod check them out
you will not be disappointed.
These remarks and opinions are not meant to disparage any
rods they all have a place, this is the opinion of this Channel only J
Keep your rod tip down and your head up and the worm will
turn, let’s go fishing Wahoo!
