Getting Ready for the Reds and Speckled Trout

Saltwater inshore anglers know the popping cork .Speckled Sea Trout ,Redfish, and most people do not know as much about it but a lot more and anglers  are catching Stripe bass, Hybrid, and even crappie using a popping cork  that can double or triple the number of fish in the  boat. Its all about the sound and the feeding frenzy it creates it is calling as much as a turkey call can call in a big gobbler the popping cork can call in big fish. Popping corks call fish with a splash that imitates a fish taking bait on the surface and the  “click” from the beads ,cork on the wire matches that sound. The fish are attracted by the sound and surface disturbance, then see and attack the jighead and swimbait hanging from 1 to 5 feet below the cork. It is the slow drop and presentation that gets the jig done along with the clicking and popping.

The “pops”  of the  cork is done by  twitching the rod, the cork shoots ahead a few inches and creates a splash and sound on the surface, while the jighead and swimbait below it comes quickly to the surface and drops  back down. The strike happens a lot of times while the jighead or fluke is falling.

Not all popping corks are created equal, cheap popping corks bend to poor wire, which decreases quality of the action and sound. Some just have a single ball bearing produce a good, loud “pop,” and“click.” The bearings themselves may be low quality and not send the sound.

The best guide we know that is a popping cork magician is Pat Mcgriff in Keaton Beach Florida,Pat  makes a living  every day with popping corks he almost always hands them a rig consisting of a Cajun Thunder or Back Bay with a jighead and live bait or  Berkley Gulp bellowt.

The fish are coming to that sound and you want the bait where they can find it most all species of fish are curious, and when you pop that cork it’s making a clicking sound like a Sprimp or bait.

He said he was fishing alongside another angler, both using the same jighead and swimbait under brand new popping corks. Both caught fish early on, but then Iverson started catching five-to-one over his client. The difference, he said, was the washer between the cork and beads. The washer keeps the beads from chipping and wearing out the underside of the cork.

Pat Knows that when you have a charter and guest  want to catch  60 or 70 specks in a morning and  all the time he spends taking off fish and handling the boat, he does not need additional time wasted  due to poor equipment.

An important key to success with a popping cork is the pace and strength of the twitches with the rod, and most guides suggest a similar starting place: two or three hard pops then let the cork settle, pause, and then a couple lighter pops. It’s important to pay attention to what’s working We all know fish are funny and whatever was the last feeding frenzy sound is fresh and the depth of the water are critical.

You have to have the right rod or all is not, we recommend a 7’0” rod with 8-17lb line weight and the best set up is 7”6” to 7”9” which makes the tip lively enough and gives the maximum click and pop with the twitch of the wrist. No more than the Bass Angler on Tour wants to have to work double time to get the right action on the bait the popping cork is no different than walking the dog just a different sequence. Cajun Custom Rods, has come out with a rod specifically designed for this technique.

Is there a perfect Popping Cork Rod, Yes the Cajun Popit!

Having used a popping cork all day on the flats with Gulps, pin-fish, pogy, and many types of jigs from the Everglades to the panhandle of Florida I can attest to the good and the bad of having the right Popping Cork rod.

If you have to rod that is to moderate or slow action rod the cork is a effort to work and it takes more that just a flick of the wrist. It also makes the setting the hook to slow and you miss a lot of fish. To fast and the hook gets pulled free on the fish when you set. The tip action and length are the key to having a great popping cork set up. Depending on the set up the leader can be 6 foot in length and the casting with accuracy can be a challenge, particularly in the wind.
Well we went to Florida and spent some time on the water and commissioned Cajun Custom Rods to design and make the perfect Popping cork rod and  the Cajun Popit is the best by design specifically for cork fishing inshore. Others claim it we prove it.

The rod is 7"6" in length ,medium action with a fast tip and you can cast accurately and also launch it to cover the splotch bottom where the trout and reds hang out, or get it right on the grass line in 2 foot and work it to call the fish to the bait. All it takes is the flip of the wrist to get the sound you want when the cork pops!

Sometimes during the year the trout and reds will not hit anything but a popping cork with live bait, jig, or flukes, and the windy days it maybe your only choice. We like the Cajun Thunder and Back Bay by Cajun Popping corks and hope to soon offer a Cajun Popping Cork with the rod, we are in the process now of working that out, but based on initial reaction to this rod thought we would get it out there for sale.

The Perfect Popping cork rod is like the perfect umbrella rig rod, and throwing it all day can be hard on the arm. You should take a close look at this rod and if you fish popping corks a lot this is the one.

Hands down … the Cajun Popit rod series are the best popping cork rods in the world! Made in the USA and America’s only exclusively designed popping cork fishing rod, these technique specific inshore popping cork rods are Cajun-designed to sling, launch, catapult, rocket, fly, and hurl your favorite popping cork rig! From Florida to Texas, the Louisiana coast, and up the eastern and western seaboards, anglers are geared up with their favorite popping cork rigs for redfish, speckled trout, and similar inshore game fish using their Cajun Popit  rods. Measuring out at 7’6” with a medium power backbone and fast action taper to handle up to to ¾ oz rigs and any mono, flouro, or super braid up to 17 lbs … whether you’re drifting a deep leader or just cruising the flats, your Cajun Popit  rod let’s you sling it, pop it, hook it, and land it … one trophy redfish or gator trout at a time!

So all the Inshore guys from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and even North Carolina next time you think about a rod for popping cork fishing this is it.

Can you find the Right Soft Plastic Bait at Wahoowaterworld.com , or in your Boat?

With the Spawn in process in the southern states and this year 2-3 weeks later than most years due to winter temps, it will not be long before the hot summer days are here and one thing that means is when you would open your tacklebox you will reach for your prized plastic worms or creature bait. Whether you are a Elite Series pro or just a weekend warrior you better be an organizer, so you do not spend valuable time searching for the one color or bait you find that works. We have all experienced that scenario all too often. You need to develop a strategy to keep your plastics in top form throughout the year.

We are all  not  competing at the highest levels of the sport; however we are all fishing for the enjoyment of catching fish and that personal best. Soft plastics storage and organization is a critical process that can't be overlooked. If you were to  weigh the amount of soft plastics you carry while fishing not to include the garage stock, We would  guess at Wahoowaterworld.com that at any given time a angler has somewhere between 150 to 300 pounds of soft plastics in your boat, truck or garage

Some anglers buy a lot of small quantities of a lot of colors, brands and styles of soft plastics, Lizards, Worms, Chunks, trailers, Craws, grubs, trickworms, finesse worms, Senkos, drop shot baits, 8 to 10” worms, paddletail worms, bugs, and 100’s of names. Then you have Yum, Zoom , Gary Yamamoto, Lake Fork, Bass Kandi, Berkley  Power Baits, Big Bite Baits, Net Baits, Damicki, Gambler, Jackal, Grande Bass, Robo Worm, reaction  baits, Mann’s. Crème, the list goes on and on. With that much inventory, most of which is in bulk quantity storing the baits by color and type for quick access is pretty critical. Keeping the baits straight in storage is whole different story for another day. A lot of anglers choice to plan the use for that day and put them somewhere for easy access, daily in individual bags so that the colors don't bleed together and they can get to them fast. When you do this it is critical that all your baits stay straight. If  bend or store all smashed together when they're stored, they will lose there  shape and actions. Plano  tackle boxes, and particularly compartment and tackle storage boxes are betting on the fact a lot of use will do that.

Straightening soft plastic baits is something  most of us do not  have the time to bother with, so  we recommend you go to great lengths to make sure it gets done in the first place.

Get plenty of clear plastic tackleboxes in your boat. The bigger quantities store totes at home where the temp won’t melt them and they lay flat and do not loose shape and actions. We all know preparation is important in anything so why not in fishing, the faster you can react the more success you will have.

Wahoowaterworld.com offer a lot of tackle storage solution that are simple and affordable and Plano Tackle boxes, and storage boxes are great for boat and vehicle, when you are looking for Creature Baits like the worm, lizard, or crawdad baits from Berkley, Yum, Zoom, Bass Kandi, Custom, Gambler makes the Bacon Rind, Zoom makes the Brush Hog, Chompers makes the SpiderCraw, and Mr. Twister, Culprit, and several other companies all offer great options. French Fry Baits/Senkos look to Lake Fork Lures, Gary Yamamoto, Berkley, Jak’s Custom, and others. Grubs, straight tail, split tail, beaver tail, single curly tail, or double curly there are choices form many manufacturers. Reapers, Tube Baits, Crawdads / Craw Worms, Lizards, Spider Jigs, Fluke Baits, all the choices and 100 are of colors. Many manufacturers  like Bass Assassin, Lunker City, and Zoom. Bobby Garland. Today, a multitude of factories including Gary Yamamoto, Assault, Gene Larew, Chompers,  Zipperworm, and Berkley are all making a spider-style jig. Edge products, Zipper, Berkley, Zoom, Gene Larew, and Mister Twister, and Crème all make Lizards.

The Crawfish baits are to many to count  with  Castaic Soft Bait crawdads and the Renosky Super Claw Crawfish, Edge Condor, Conrad lures, Riverside Big Craw, Gambler's Guido Bug series, Berkley's Power Craw, Zoom's Big Critter Craw, and the Zipper Craw/.

You have 1000’s of dollars invested in these baits give each a quick spray of scent before sealing. Whatever storage you use, today’s improved soft plastics do not all require storing them in consistent temperatures as it once was. New plastics are just a lot more durable and less prone to temperature fluctuations, however you can lose shape and action and you can lose the color of soft plastics, proper storage and organization are still critical. "You don't have to have a fanatical  system to keep everything straight, just something simple that keeps you straight. When those magical moments happen and all the things are right  having the right bait is everything and being able to get to it quickly is everything.

Will the Real Gary Loomis Rod Please Stand-up

WILL THE REAL GARY LOOMIS ROD PLEASE STAND -UP

Having, heard all the stories and the banter on forums and websites all over in the fishing world.

I decided to take a look into the G-Loomis vs the North Fork Composites and where  a real Gary Loomis blank is made today, not the rods made years  past before Shimano purchased G-Loomis from Gary Loomis. So here is what I know so far.

G-Loomis yes has a facility in Woodland Washington and the address is G.Loomis, Down River Drive, Woodland, WA and the link to see that on Google maps is Link:

North Fork Composites has a facility in Woodland Washington and the location is 2617 NE 434th St Woodland, WA 98674 and the link for that facility.

Gary Loomis left G.Loomis and got involved with a fly and fishing lures and was sued by Shimano and spent over 250,000 in legal fees and finally settled with Shimano.

Gary continued and thought that he could help out the industry that made him the legend. So the best thing to do for Gary Loomis was to make blanks for custom rod builders again and see if he could make the magic happen twice in a lifetime. He also does a lot of work in the Salmon and Steelhead conversation area.

“That’s where Gary Loomis is today, he is back at it, building the best blanks in the world so anglers can build the best rods possible.

Ever industry is always changing come changes positive, and others are not and just noise.  Sometimes blanks are a story more than some new technology and that is all marketing. North Fork Composites, was started and is based on the things that have over time worked and over time have proven again and again just by incorporating the latest materials and techniques.  One of the biggest challenges for North fork Composites has been finding good partners to get supplies from for North Fork Composites some of that maybe due to Gary Loomis Standards others maybe in my opinion Shimano and the 800lb Gorilla pushing  weight around to stop the Real Gary Loomis from standing up. No proof of that but just a hunch. I am not an insider by any stretch but been around for a while in business, maybe it is something else.

“It’s been a while since Gary jumped back in the industry and now that he is back. He has a robust market for Salmon, steelhead and Carp rods in country across the pond, has taped into Russia. He has found is way and is back dealing with people from the past in the supply chain for raw material. North Fork Composites has performance rods with materials that offer 20% increase over most graphite’s being used by the major manufacturers. North Fork Composites has a rod line that is definition of premium EDGE RODs.

Gary Loomis is alive and well after beating cancer, but make no mistake he signed on and help companies like Temple Fork Outfitters who make noise about having a Gary Loomis Blank, but Temple Fork is a Value Line with a lot of Entry level products, the real Gary Loomis does not make blanks in China and it is on the Temple Fork products (Made In China) there is a place for all that, but when it comes to making a real Gary Loomis product that comes from North Fork Composite. At least that’s the way I see it, but what do I know I am just an Angler.

Conclusion: All the stories about Gary Loomis making G-Loomis Rods in Woodland Washington this is not true, Gary Loomis does not  work for Shimano, the Real Gary Loomis is NFC and even though change is going to happen, I am one of those who would like something’s to change and other traditions to stay.

Maybe old fashion maybe not, but I do know USA MADE, NFC North Fork Composite will the Real Gary Loomis please stand up!

Lamiglas Surf Rods and Wahoowaterworld.com

SURF ROD CHOICES FROM LAMIGLAS

I HAVE TO SAY TO START THAT SURF FISHING IS NOT THE MOST WELL PUBLISHED FISHING STYLE BUT IT IS IN CERTAIN AREAS THE BEST WAY TO GET THE FISH WHERE THE WAVES AND THE ROCKS CREATE A LOT OF OBSTCLES FOR BOAT ANGLERS. IN THE NORTHEAST I HAVE ONLY BEEN surf fishing 2-3 times and I USED LAMIGLAS TRI-FLEX SURF ROD 10 FT. It takes a little while to get the hang of casting bait rigs and tying the right knot is especially important in surf fishing and the line and leader are keys as well. Lot anglers and when I went stood in knee to waist high water when fishing and me and the reel I was using a Penn Torgue tend to get a soaking.

You can spend as little as 100.00 for a good surf rod with the right action and make sure the rod loads well. A rod with a nice light action which I really like is what we recommend. Depending what fish you're chasing I would recommend a 'light action to medium action surf' rod. Assuming you will be chasing the usual suspects – Rockfish, stripe bass, big reds, snook, and occasional mackerel from the surf any species from the pier.

We will make one warning and that is a cheap rod is cheap for a reason and when you go to all the effort and have all the gear to surf fish you do not need to be trying to fix, repair or replace gear, fish on.

You can also consider a low-mount 12' or 13' rod    there are also a lot of combos that should last a long, time.  If you decide go to the surf with a spin reel the Penn makes tough rod/ reel combos and at a good price.

Wahoowaterworld.com has an awesome assortment of surf rods from Lamiglas and the prices range from 135.00 to 400.00 and you know the quality and the rod balance and set up is going to be done right. Whether you choose Lamiglas Insane, Lamiglas Tri-Flex, Lamiglas Graphite Surf & Jetty, Infinity Surf, Lamiglas Surf King Series, or the Ron Arra Pro Surf Series you will have choices that from 1-5 oz lure weights,9-13 feet in length, exceptional taper choices ,1 piece or 2 piece. The Line weight range from 12-20lb to 15-30lb as well.

LAMIGLAS Infinity Surf rods feature improved resin systems that give Lamiglas designers the ability to develop rods that are not only incredibly strong and durable, but also lighter in weight and more sensitive. Combined with Fuji K-Frame guides, Fuji reel seats and a Paco Ernandez inspired grip, the new Infinity Surf Series sets a higher standard in surf rods.

LAMIGLAS RON ARRA PRO SURF RODS Designed with guidance from five-time national distance casting champion, professional casting instructor and best-selling author Ron Arra, these fast-action surf rods offer incredible power, distance and control. These rods are Optimized for both traditional monofilament and high-strength braided lines with the Fuji Alconite Concept guide system.

Lamiglas Graphite Surf & Jetty rods:  Pick any beach, any pier, any jetty anywhere around the world and chances are there are fish to be caught…if you have the right equipment. These super-durable graphite rods are ideal for slick rocky shores and pounding waves. Soft tips aid in the right presentation, and the rods have plenty of power to put the brakes on when fish head for the rocks. The distinctive high-gloss, clear-coated design with black wraps and gold accents makes a bold statement. Final touches include Fuji guides, Fuji graphite reel seats and an attractive, functional EVA and cork-tape handle.

Lamiglas Super Surf Super Surf 2G: Redesigned and better than ever. The original SuperSurf series was one of the best-selling lines in the Lamiglas offering, Lamiglas kept all the best attributes and added even more. SuperSurf 2G rods are now lighter and more durable than ever through the process of integrating new technology and materials. Each and every model now looks as good as they cast. Featuring Fuji reel seats, lightweight K-frame guides, and a beautiful, aqua-blue finish.

Lamiglas Insane King series. These six rods represent a value unequalled in surf rods. Premium graphite blanks, the finest Lamiglas tapers, aluminum oxide guides and cork tape grips, finished with our black and silver wraps (which, by the way, look great in trophy photos). Be prepared to lug loads of fish up the beach, along with the extra weight of cash in your pocket. Lamiglas one year limited warranty. These rods retail for less than 199 as well.

The surf casting rod requires that you are able to cover the distance to the break or to the small water jetties where the fish will ambush from. So one of surf fishing's biggest challenge is, casting distance

At Wahoowaterworld.com we think that having the proper surf fishing rod will help solve this problem.

In addition to the rod selection is also using well known casting techniques, like the ground cast and the pendulum cast. It is impossible to go over all the cast in blog but there are a lot of video and local knowledge that can help you get up to speed in this area if you are new and maybe learn something new if you are a veteran at the surf fishing game. There is nothing wrong with practice either.

Wahoowaterworld.com recommends a graphite rod. If you choose graphite it is for the lighter weight and greater flexibility which provided more whipping action. With Graphite you want to increase the length to a 12' rod. Like we said earlier cheap rods are cheap for a reason, nothing wrong with saving a buck and looking for value. If you do choose a fiberglass rod it is stiffer than the graphite which limited casting distance. With the graphite rod you can cast further and get into deeper water. When you do this it will likely result in catching more fish.

We see a lot of 20 lb. line with 4 oz. pyramid weights and 40 lb. leader being used on the surf, your set up maybe different but if you rig for this going slightly down or up is not a problem depending on the bite.

When you set up your rod and gear we recommend that you add a shock leader to the line. The shock leader will prevent your line from breaking when you cast it. Set the long enough that when casting you have 4 or 5 rotations of the leader on your fishing reel. So the leader should be about 2x’s the length of the rod. Finally set up your leader to be 10x the weight of the lure of weighted bait rig you are using.

Surf rods, surf casting rods, surf spinning rods, all have their place and the length and action are all a part as well as the casting and rig you are using. Select a reel that matches with the rod, never make that decision lightly. If you are unsure we are happy to help and make our recommendation to you.

In the end we think Lamiglas makes some of the best surf rods on the market, however if you want to take a look at some of the other brands we have like Phenix Surf rods they are also an excellent choice.

If you are on a tight budget look at some of the Shakespeare and Penn combos that are excellent values.

In conclusion if you intend to stay with the surf fishing and have all the success you can this blog and wahoowaterworld.com believes the Lamiglas Surf rods cover beginner to avid and price points that you can afford no matter your level of action and experience. So remember when you set the hook and it feels good say it loud Wahoo!  Fish with confidence and a Lamiglas Surf Rod.

Bomber Lures Silent or Rattling and Wahoowaterworld.com

BOMBER FAT FREE SILENT BEING ONE OF THEM

With Crank Bait choices in today’s market place. Some look real and are premium or marketed as and some are staples that have been around for years. There are baits that look identical and have some differences hidden within the lure. Lets compare the silent vs. rattling crankbaits.

Crankbaits over the years and for the past 20 years  have had evolution to a lot of silent running crankbaits, some of those that are hand made balsa baits, some are plastic but without rattles or silent running . Back in the day 99% of all plastic crankbaits, had rattles in the bodies. Only a very few plastic crankbaits  had no rattles. The rattles makes the bait easier to cast and cast farther  and made noise on the retrieve. Strike King made hay with the KVD brand because the Micheal Jordan of fishing starting talking it up at tournament and the 1.5, 2.5 and 1.0 series were made big, The came the copy cats all kinds  of sound , rattling ,vibrating, and nonrattling crankbaits, As a brand Strike King and Bomber brands baits offered so many the silent, nonrattling bait it was hard to select  Then s the Rapala Shad Rap and the Lucky Craft LC and BDS  all added silent in crankbaits.Lure manufacturers are coming out with silent versions these days, including Bandit, Norman, Lucky Craft, Bomber, Xcalibur.

You will get all kinds of  observations and opinions that bass are pretty intelligent animals and get conditioned to seeing he same lures being throwing at them. That is why new companies are something successful with something a little new. Hooks on  crankbaits have all kinds of versions on top and weight all change the appearance in some fashion or another.  These things present different profiles to fish and  often get bit on that different profile. Often, the difference is subtle but in other cases it is the only thing that seems to work. Using silent running crankbaits is just part the options you have that any angler can use to get a bite. one more bite or one more fish.

.There really no crank bait silently. The hooks against the body, the vibration that the lure puts off wiggling through the water, the split ring grinding.all create some sound. The term silent just means from a marketing stand point that the lure does not have rattles in the chamber of the bait, and are called silent running. Rattling crankbaits mean just that, there is a rattle chamber with BBs in it. This type of crankbait is the predominant type of lure manufactured currently.

WHY silent and rattling crankbaits, there are times when one works better than another. There is no magic or specific time, but a little trial and error can a more successful trip. During the day determine if something is working better than another kind of crankbait. This can includes changing brands, colors or even types of crankbaits (rattle/nonrattle). That is why things are constantly changing.

Some people and Larry Dahlenberg is the master of modifications that  can be made to the plastic baits include: drilling holes to take the rattles out, or add rattles or different kinds of rattles  to this  gluing the rattles in place, and adding weight The bait can be made silent, but will not work successfully, as it will killed most of the action of the bait.

The most successful of these baits was the hand crafted D Bait, running about $15/lure Stanford Cedar Shad, same as the D-bait, but diving a little deeper and heavier.  Suddeth’s have rattles, only 3 did not have rattles (out of 12), they were successful.

No one has any way to measure  activity with the exception of catch rates, which is marketing and opinion.

So what conditions favor the silent baits over the rattling baits? Here is one opinion overcast skies, wind, slightly stained water (visibility of about 10-12"), after a front or prefrontal conditions (lowering or steady barometric pressure) on a highly pressured lake. But these are the best times for plastic baits also. Keep logs, this seems to help consistency in your fishing. Having guided and fished 1000's of days on a pressured lake . It boils down to this a different setup (different lure, no split ring setup).  There will be times when the silent out produced the rattling Crankbaits, but I thought this would be enough to illustrate the point.

Let’s consider something else, as well why do anglers have baits they fish with in soft plastics and cranks over and over ,Confidence. The same for any fishing silent in ultra-muddy water, you can have just as much, if not more success on silent running baits as rattling baits. Some instances fish attack the bait and clobbered it violently. Sometimes you get hits but it is reaction and not as high a hook up rate.

You see, you cannot be afraid to try things that the fish have not seen before. Fish get accustomed to seeing the same lures day after day, If you can present something that they have not seen before,  the odds have  changed over into your favor. WHAT does that include? Thinking outside the box? Well, there is NO end to the things you can do to change a crankbaits or soft plastics to make it seem different. Imagination is the only thing holding you back from experimenting with different presentations that might be out of the box thinking. MOST anglers will not try things that they are not comfortable with. I, my CONFIDENCE am ME, not the bait. You can figure them out, just give it a little time and you will get something that they will bite. Does this always work, OF COURSE NOT, but it works enough for you us all to continue to do the out of the box things because it works often enough fish in the boat or money in the bank if you are a pro.

So in the end bomber, strike king, Lucky Strike ,Kopers, homemade, balsa, all of it boils down to this they all will catch fish but which one gives a different look, presentation, or vibration and sound. Try them and build your own opinion and confidence.

I have seen a product that some are afraid to use and say it does not help them and they have never even tried it, the fishing rod is not even a bait, it sends vibration to soft plastics, so why if silent, rattling, wiggles, glue, alterations all work why would a vibration to a soft plastic work. It does and there are 100's of anglers who have confidence in it and catch fish.

So be you own and have your own opinion and confidence.
