Fish of the Day Pompano!

pompano (2)

With a compressed body and short snout the colors vary see in the photos, from blue, green, and silver on the dorsal areas and silver to yellow on the body and fins. Pompano can be found along the  coast of the Atlantic Ocean, depending on the time of the year, Pompano  are  popular for anglers. In  Florida most pompano caught weigh less than 3 lb.  and about 15-17 inches long, the large pompano can weigh up to 9-10 lbs and oh-boy can they pull. Fast growing and great table fare when you see them in the store sale chances are they are farmed raised, check the packaging.

Pompano love sand fleas, mole crabs, and small crustaceans that washed off the beach and carried out by the waves. So best chance catch a pompano is at the beach or a pier. Look for sand fleas photo below you find them on the beach and you usually find Pompano. Catch sand fleas; look for v-shaped eddies where the waves move off the beach. Likely here you will find sand fleas. They dig in put them in a holder or small bucket or container and off you go for pompano. Wahoo Can tell you this no sand fleas no Pompano about 90% of the time. Sometime small shrimp really small will work. Pompano travel in schools, so catching 1 fish indicates a school is nearby. If you don't want to catch live sand fleas before fishing for pompano, you can try using a sand flea lure but we do not like this option very much.

Early spring is the best time for Pompano and then the early fall; coming up all has to do with water temp and food source. You will see most of the pompano in the passes where they are better suited to spinning rods .Once you have a spot is located make note of it for the future because they will tend to frequent the same spots. Pompano can be found at times on grass flat with more than 3' of water, but for best results, concentrate on flats that are a little more sandy than grassy.   (SAND FLEAS IN SAND DUHH)

This is one of the favorite fish at Wahoo Tackle and fishing and if you do not have a boat and like to eat well this one you can do during 2 seasons if you pay attention and try hard. Ask around where anyone caught one pompano there are more most people do not know that they think it was a fluke. Shared a lot on this species not usual on how to, so if you want more information on Pompano or would like to fish for them give us a call we can hook you up so to speak.
