Wahootackleandfishing.com What makes a good fishing ROD or Not!

Material to Make a Fishing Rod and the Power of Choice!

Krypton and Superman Graphite

“Super” Graphite. This super graphite allows for  smaller-diameter blanks with faster actions. High-modulus graphite fibers under high pressure are used to create a perfectly balanced, lightweight blank that is more responsive and more sensitive than anything on the market today. Fly Rods Sage, Lamiglas, North Fork Composites, and Phenix rods. You want find one of these for $ 99.97

Lighter, Stronger, and what last Longer!

Carbon Weave Rods

These rods the Diameter of blank is less, and when designed with right resin you can get a lot lighter-weight rod than comparable graphite’s on the market. These rods perform like some rods found only in second- and third-generation graphite’s. Superior performance at a great price! Phenix Rods,  Lamiglas, and Mega Bass are the best in this area. These blanks are strong and have great cast ability but give up some sensitivity.

 Graphite

Most identifiable  material marketed in fishing rods. The more break downs or the generation of graphite coupled with the type of resin used can reduce overall weight while maintaining exceptional flexibility. Modulus SM,IM,HM this is where the separation happens from the more expensive rods and the less expensive rods, it takes a lot of pressure and a lot of material modulus of graphite and the resin under extreme pressure  to create a extremely light rod with greater strength and you can usually feel the fish think about biting the bait, So look for that Standard Modulus, Intermediate Modulus, and High Modulus designation and you will  also see the separation and difference in a Jarvis Walker fiberglass rod with plastic guides for 39.97 and 300.00 with Titanium and HM graphite rod. You will only find these type rods  at its best in USA  Manufactured rods like North Fork Composites, St Croix and Lamiglas, Cajun Custom Rods, Cashion, Powell, and the other company G something but a lot of rods are made overseas and try and trick the buyer there is no industry monitored standard and no one really cares but they price high are more expensive than the USA rods and ask yourself why?

 E-Glass

The most durable material in fiberglass is E Glass. The glass is matched to unique application-such as cranking rods for bass; mooching and down-rigger rods for salmon, shark, tuna, stripers and king mackerel. It all boils down to weight and strength with some sensitivity. Seeker Rods does a great job with this material. A lot of Bass world use this rod but there are some great saltwater applications as well. Lamiglas, Seeker, and others use this designation.

Graphite or Fiberglass Construction. ( COMPOSITE)

Some rods use graphite base and fiberglass wrap or weave, then are reinforced with graphite through power sections. Graphite adds some sensitivity and you get durability of fiberglass. These are usually great rods for reaction fishing coupled with power and enough sensitivity to get feel on crank baits or swim baits, topwater or even a popping cork inshore.. For bass and walleye these are great cranking ,trolling, rods and less expensive to make in material. Fiberglass is less cost than graphite. There are so many variations that will sometimes make your head spin that is why every rod maker focuses on the looking cool part of the rod more than the quality. It really is elimination by confusion , if that makes any sense. Be sure to look closely 30-70, 60-40 which is it Graphite or Fiberglass, you could put graphite in the tip section and non in the rest of the rod and call it a Graphite composite. Bottom line what do you want from the rod. Lamiglas, Seeker and Shakespeare use this and are great for Offshore spinning rods and heavier blue water.

Setting up the Rod, action Power, Taper and Weight!

Action

“Action” is the measurement of deflection or flex the rod under load, and where that flex occurs along the length of the blank. “Extra Fast” actions flex towards the tip. “Slow” actions flex throughout the entire blank.  There is no scientifically accurate measurement system accepted by the entire industry, so no two rods are alike.  Check out some of the new ratings on rating deflection on North Fork Composites site.

POWER of a ROD

Rod Power” is defined by the amount of pressure required to flex the blank.  The Oldest measure for this is how many “pennies it takes to do that, so all the rods designed should perform best with a specific lure and line weight.  Light lures then rod needs less power, heavy lures the rod needs more power.

What matters in all this is simple a 6’6”-7’2” rod in a medium heavy action and fast tip or taper will perform in about 80% of freshwater applications and inshore as well. Add a medium  moderate t taper and this rod will be 6’9” to as long as 7’6” and rated 6-12 line for lighter fishing lure applications and finally a Heavy action rod with a extra fast tip for heavier lure applications and can be 10-20 or 15-30 in freshwater and maybe 20-40 lb. in some saltwater rods.  4 rods and you can fish anywhere except maybe the surf rod and that is a whole day later.

WEIGHT

Determined by the type and amount of material used and the components like single foot guides, double foot guides, skeleton grips or full grips. Remember the blank is 89% of weight reduce weight of compents and you have lighter rods, some manufactures use cheap plastic light weight components to make lighter rid because the blank is less quality and weighs more than graphite rods. The thing you should focus on is stronger rod with smaller diameter blank with less material and you have lighter rod, and look closely the best rods are the rods made with exceptional material and highest quality components like 316SS, Titanium, with presses inserts so they do not come out and are still light. Light weight and great components equals a higher priced rod .

TAPER

The change in the diameter of the blank from tip to butt is taper like a .6 butt and a 4 tip or a 8 but and a 5 tip. Rod, taper is only one of the things which rod builders use to achieve action in a rod like medium, fast and xtra fast. The more dramatic or aggressive taper at the tip makes the rod faster action. A straight taper little change in diameter from tip to butt creates a moderate or slower action

A lot of things to consider in rods, what works for you in fishing the way you fish is what matters, if you want to buy 40.00 rods every year with plastic guides to reduce weight and that works then do it.If you want to buy one rod that can last a lifetime of fishing seasons we think we know a little about that.

Cashion, Cajun Custom Rods, St Croix Rods,, Lamiglas Rods, Seeker, Phenix Rods, Powell Rods, Falcon Rods, and North Fork Composites Rods are some of the rod companies we think are not just making a rod that looks cool but there is some engineering under the hood that considers application and all the things in this equation. We hope you will buy your rod from Wahootackleandfishing and if you are a offshore angler look at our USA handcrafted and custom Catcher Rods !
