FISH OF THE DAY SHARKS!

With Shark Week just ended and the fear of the shark it is a fact that they are , loved my some and targeted by many anglers. One of the most publicized fish of all, and Defined as a fish with a  sleek, streamlined body, a shark can range in size from the two foot pygmy shark, to the colossal 50-foot whale shark. There are more than 250 species of sharks and one of the most of anything in the sea. So I will not attempt to list them. Sharks are found in every major body of saltwater in the world, but are more common in warmer waters. There are a small number of shark species that do thrive in fresh water, and certain sharks have been known to venture from their saltwater homes to major freshwater lakes and rivers. Sharks are hunters and predators but some are more predatory than others. Sharks can smell from miles away and chum lines are used by anglers to attract them close to the boat when fishing. The most popular for fishing is Bull Sharks cousin to the Great White, Mako in the Atlantic very athletic and fierce if hooked, Black tips, Hammer Heads, Reef Sharks, Blue Sharks, and Sand Sharks. On the west coast the seven gill, bronze whaler, hammer head, Mako and white pointer sharks are popular angler targets. Specialized tackle is needed to catch sharks and tournaments are very popular on both coast as well as more and more Surf anglers are targeting the Shark.

Rod and Reel: A rod with lot of power and backbone and a reel with a great drag. A  6/0 to 9/0. Use a 40-80lb. or 60-100lb rod minimum stiff action and if you are on the surf at least 7 ft we like minimum of roller tip and stripper guide roller you will use some long wire leaders.

Line:  500 yards of 100# pound Power Pro and add 200- 300 yards of 50# pound mono on top of it. You can handle sharks to 300# and have power to handle the 6-10 footers,

Leaders and terminal: Components like hooks, snap swivels; longer leaders make it easy to handle sharks.  A twenty foot section of heavy  monofilament, 400# test barrel swivel,  500# test snap swivel , #250 plastic coated  cable with  a 20/0 circle hook. If you want to know more about how to make leaders send us a email and we will share a few secrets with you.
